You Should Consider Freezing Your Eggs for Fertility Preservation
Fertility Preservation is a new way of empowering reproductive choice. Reproductive choice means having children when you prefer, rather than when you must. The fertility of youth is no longer a limited resource, constrained by age. Women can potentially pursue their reproductive lives at their own pace, rather than according to the obligations of biology.
DID YOU KNOW?
As you age, your fertility declines
You are born with 1- 2 million eggs
These eggs are gradually lost as you age (at a rate of about 1,000 per month) and are never replenished
The vitality of the eggs that remain is related to your age
Beyond age 30, fertility begins to decline
Fertility declines rapidly after age 35
After age 40 a woman has < 5 % chance each month of conceiving naturally
Miscarriages and chromosome defects become more common as you age
A woman’s fertility potential can be determined in part by a blood test
Egg freezing potentially empowers reproductive choice
HAVE YOU TESTED YOUR FERTILITY POTENTIAL?
Ovarian reserve describes the number of eggs that remain in the ovary. The greater the number of eggs, the better the chance that some are healthy. Medical tests can help predict ovarian reserve.
Indirect measures of ovarian reserve
o FSH and Estradiol, on menstrual cycle day 3
Direct measures of ovarian reserve
o Antral Follicle Count (AFC)
o Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH)
STEPS TO FERTILITY PRESERVATION
Fertility Preservation or egg freezing incorporates existing fertility therapies.
Consultation to determine candidacy for egg freezing
Discussion of the risk and benefits of Fertility Preservation
Evaluation of ovarian reserve with an ultrasound and blood test
Administration of fertility medications for approximately ten days
Removal of eggs from the ovaries using ultrasound guidance under sedation
Vitrification, an ultra-rapid freezing technique, is used to preserve the eggs
Eggs remain frozen in stasis until needed
Eggs are thawed when ready for fertilization
Fertilization with the injection of a single sperm using ICSI (Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection)

Oocyte cryopreservation is an experimental procedure. Data relating to clinical outcomes are limited. Oocyte cryopreservation is not an established medical treatment. Before undergoing the procedure women should be informed fully about the process involved and the clinical outcomes that reasonably can be expected so that they can make a truly informed decision and give valid consent. Counseling by a qualified mental health professional is recommended.
